Subject: Setting up on-farm research trials

Southeast WI
Even though it's been cold the cover plots with cereal rye are greening up nicely. Looks much thicker and greener by eye from the ground but always interesting to me to take the drone up and snap a few pics. This gives perspective on what trials look like.

The first couple pics are the 2nd year of a SARE project with "small plots" looking at 2 rates of rye seeding, no rye and 2 different timing rates when killing them. One field is mine the other belongs to NKau. Goal is to quantify biomass production, weed control from rye and soybean grain yield from no covers, covers killed preplant and covers killed near or at anthesis well after planting. This yield data is sorely lacking - much of the conversation around yield enhancement or yield destruction lies in "I think". We need to move beyond that.

The second couple pictures are of my 2 long term cover plots I've had in for 10 years now. The corn field rye was put in a couple weeks after the bean stubble field so from the air it's hard to see much green there.
