Subject: soybean damage - deer, raccoon, other (solved)

swmn
I have a soybean field adjacent to a wetland where I'm seeing some relatively recent wildlife damage. One patch encompasses much of a 200' x 50' area close to the wetland where the plants have been flattened, mostly bent over but often broke at the base. Nothing appears to have laid down in the area and neither my neighbor or I could find any sign of tracks (soil is dry but may have been rained on once). The second patch is closer to a paved road, much of a 100' x 50' area damaged. Areas in this second patch are more flattened and broke, as if they were used to bed down, but still no tracks. There was some raccoon scat in this second patch and some trails through the ditch grass leading to this patch.

I'd think that deer tracks would be easy to see if deer caused the damage. Would raccoons cause damage over that wide an area in a soybean field? Mating season or whatever? Not sure what to make of it.
