Subject: Need of House Air Conditioner advise

Southern Ontario
Our house has a 10 year old central a/c unit.....3.5 or 4 ton York 134a.
We hardly ever use it, perhaps just one or two weeks per year.
Our family has good heat tolerance.
It has ran, at most, 20 weeks total running time since it was new.
It started to ice up the evaporator coil a time or two last summer.
It was not working this spring and we thought we should get it going for kids who were doing Covid university and summer semester from home.
A cousin recommended an A/C guy from his church.
The A/C guy was very hesitant on what to do, he left and came back a number of times and had to borrow diagnostic tools.
He thought there may be a leak in the condenser coil (outside)....but could never verify a leak.
He finally added refrigerant, and to his credit, we have had good cooling all summer...we have had it going for 10 straight days b/c family guests have been visiting here from cooler climate areas....
A/C ran great and very cool since spring and all during current heat spell for our guests..... until now.....
Evaporator (in plenum) is now iced up.... cannot get air to flow.

Do we have a refrigerant leak? Or?

Do the major A/C guys have definate diagnostic tools?

If we do have a leak, how do we address it?

Is there a type of 'slime' material to plug/patch the line?

Are some patching brands better than others?

Can the condenser coil be taken out and replaced w/o replacing other components?

What should I do here? I texted the church A/C guy and he said he had to think on it.

Wife and I never had A/C in our homes growing up and this is the first time I have had to deal with a residential A/C problem, so I figured you guys would be better to steer me in the right direction.

Merci beaucoup, Thanx, stay cool.
