Subject: Has anybody played with DEEP ripping?

Concordia,Kansas
I dug a bunch of root pits this fall and was surprised by what I found. We have awesome soil structure down about twelve inches, then it seems to be reverting to a blocky soil structure on down to about thirty two inches. We are starting to see some soil infiltration issues, and have huge amounts of fertility tied up in the lower strata.

I`m thinking about running a tile plow, or something similar down as deep as we possibly can (I`m thinking five to eight feet) on about thirty foot centers and breaking up the blocky and sub soil structures. If I can infiltrate and mix this soil, there should be some long term benefits. I`m thinking about doing this in the fall, during the growing phase of the sweet clover rotation and deep plowing it the next spring to mix what I`ve broke loose.

Has anyone out there done anything like this? If so what did you find and did it help the farm long term?
