Subject: background/finish handling facility

This past summer we built up for feeding some steers (in at 500-600, out at 1400-1500). Now we have decided we need to do something so we can work the cattle more reliably. We currently do not implant and have been fortunate to not get any sick animals and haven't had to give any shots.

As we move forward now, we are wanting to implant, have a better sorting/working facility, and just be able to handle sick animals. We currently have room for about 150-200 animals (2-100 hd lots), maybe someday larger.

What capacity pens and how many pens should we be thinking for sorting and holding after receiving and before selling? Is there a foolproof way to sort?

Should we be able to handle a whole pen (100hd) in the working facility at one time?

Do we need a headgate only or complete squeeze chute for handling/implanting 500-1400lb steers?

We want to set things up right, but keep the budget in mind as well.

We are basically starting from scratch, so any and all comments are welcome.

Thanks.
