Subject: Irrigation investment....yes or no

Western Iowa
This could have gone in either machinery forum or crop talk so sorry in advance.

I have been thinking about a center pivot on one of our lighter soil farms lately. I figure I could get about 40 to 50 bu/a more corn with the help of a pivot. Here's the problem....even with that yield bump from water, it still doesn't pencil out. I don't want to force the investment to look good but what am I missing here. I took in all the factors I could think of also I used a spreadsheet from zimmatic.

What am I missing? On an average year the pivot costs $40/a more than not having it. On a drought year I will be a wash. Is it just an insurance option or is there more to it? Should I just take the $75000 and invest in more land?

Thanks in advance.

Ken
