Subject: orchardgrass

If it rains I'm going to plant a late summer seeding of pure orchardgrass. I've got a choice between early and late maturing. I've always selected late maturing either in combination with alfalfa or in a pure stand. My question is does the early maturing put on significantly more early vegetative growth than the late maturing or does it just go to seed earlier. Why I ask there were several chances to make hay in early April if I'd had more growth. May was a total washout and by the time I cut in June the hay was over mature. I'm looking to take advantage of another window or at least spread my weather risk.
