Subject: kitchen remodel header question.

south central WI
I/wife wants to remove a loaf bearing wall. It started out a small section, now she wants close to 18' gone. This would require a large chunk of wood I assume. I plan on putting a support around half way, turning it into 2 9' openings. This would be at the end of the L shaped cabinets. Reading a little and it sounds like you need 1" for every 1' of opening as a general rule of thumb. My 9' openings would then need 2 2x10's. Does this sound correct? I don't want to weaken the structure, but I don't want to lose more headroom either. I could possibly add a 3rd layer if needed, but that requires swimming out a small wall to hide the extra layer. I plan on covering the support and beam in Oak to blend it in.
