Subject: silage storage questions

West Salem, Illinois
Has anyone run the numbers on the three main types of silage storage? I am curious which is the most cost effective or biggest bang for the dollars spent. I am comparing upright silo, silage bunker, silage bags. I am in South Eastern Illinois where we can not depend on a winter freeze but can count on the mud! I realize that the upfront costs to put an upright silo or a bunker is quite high compared to the initial investment of bagging silage, but if you consider that you pay the bagger and buy a new bag every year plus I would think that you would need to spend additional dollars on rock every couple years. There is also the equipment needed for the various types an upright has an advantage that you flip a switch and can unload.
