Subject: burn down volunteer grain ahead of cover crops?

Idaho
i've seeded cover crops into barley stubble two different times (austrian winter peas once and tillage radishes the other time), and both times the volunteer barley outran the cover crops and had to be sprayed out with clethodim. i'm fixing to seed a cover crop cocktail into barley stubble this year, so clethodim isn't an option. wondering if i should water up the volunteers and spray with glyphosate before seeding the cocktail. doesn't seem like the cover crops will do much good if they get choked out by volunteer grain.

has this been a problem for you cocktail farmers?
