Subject: Pasture renovation

Manson IA
I have a 4 acre pasture out to the south. It hasn't had anything done with it other than a once or twice a year mow with a sickle for prolly 5 years or better. There are a few weeds, but not too bad, mostly bromegrass. Problem is in the spring about half of it will be under water for a couple weeks. In those areas in particular the grass is pretty short and isn't growing well. After all the standing water from the spring is gone it is dry most of the year.

I would like to revitalize it a bit with minimal expense. I'd rather not tear it up and re-seed it unless that is my only option. I would like to take one cutting off the brome a year and let horses graze on it the rest of the year. Hopefully get enough bales off of it to feed the wife's two horses through the winter.

I'm wondering if fertilizing it this fall, and maybe overseeding will help? Thought about a 3pt plug aerator first?

Any opinions appreciated!
