I haven't used a cold cut saw in 25 years so I may be out of date.  I always used coolant (water soluble oil).  Could take a quick cut and be ok but the blade will stay sharper and last longer with fluid.  Soluble oil is better than water. 

Used one a bunch, would rather have a band saw.
