If your drum switch has a true off position between forward and reverse, I would just install it between the start/stop switch (the actual 3phase switch or contactor that breaks the lines, not the push buttons that control a magnetic starter) and the motor.

That way you can have foot pedal in Off and hit Start button to send power to drum switch so you control it with your foot. When done, hit Stop button to kill the foot pedal/drum switch.

I would suggest wiring in a light or something to warn the start is pushed and the foot pedal is “hot”.

When operating with just the start/stop buttons, you have a choice of direction by standing on the correct pedal or blocking it in the desired direction if you don’t want to use your foot.


The pedal has a center "off" position (spring return to off) but wouldn't wiring it in between the start button and motor make it so it would only operate with the pedal? I think that's why the one I used had the selector switch.
