From what guys on here have said over the years they are kind of hit and miss. We had one many years ago and it worked great. It kept an 80 pound lab in with no trouble. I admit that we were less than by the book with the training and the dog still caught on immediately. It got to where I could take the collar off to charge it and forget to put it back on her for a week or more and she would still respect the boundary. I have a friend who has one and his experience is similar. I have known a couple of people personally who have not had the best of luck and many people on here claim that their dog will run through them. I guess it must depend on the dog. I also think the quality of installation can be an issue. If the wire is buried too deep it can cause issues. I do know of one guy who was having issues and it turned out that he had a weak ground where he had the unit installed. They are not terribly expensive so I guess my advice would be to give it a try.
