SW South Dakota | My parents put in a mini split system this summer. They have hot water heat in most of the house with electric cove heat in the kitchen. They put a mini split unit in the kitchen and one in their bedroom. The door to the livingroom from kitchen is about six foot wide. It did very good cooling the house this summer, but we weren't extremely hot this year. If you have rooms that open to one another you could use one unit to cool multiple rooms. They are whisper quiet unless you put the fan on high. I'd recommend talking to somebody who installs them and get estimates. My parents got two estimates, the one was $4,000 cheaper than the other for the same units.
Another benefit is they have heat and are very efficient. My parents have an electric monitor and the mini splits seem to use less than one kwh when running. Their electric cove heat uses about 2-3 kwh when heating. | |
