Sure hate to hear something like this and hoping everything turns out OK. Be willing to bet that most of us have at some time also got in a hurry and just flat out ignored the safe way to do something. Mine was to just tightened up the packing gland while the engine was running. Had done it hundreds of times and it was quick and simple.  That one time it was cold and raining and I had a rain jacket on. The bolt on the shaft caught the sleeve, ripped a gash in my ear, broke a rib, tore the sleeve off of the jacket and gave me a pretty good gash on my neck. Sure glad that sleeve was ripped of. Ambulance hauled me about 30 miles to the ER.  To this day, the power source  is shut off of all equipment before I'll touch it.
