| I knew several older farmers when I was younger, now 67, that were missing either fingers or arms due to corn picker accident. When I was 12 or so my uncle got his left hand chewed up pretty bad when he reached back to shove some ears down in the elevator hopper on our #24 picker & his foot slipped off the Hs clutch. He was wearing leather gloves that had the little steel ball on the draw string and the steel ball got caught in a drive chain. He had limited use of that hand for the rest of his life. I
I would sit on the H and engage the picker while he would oil chains. Kinda of scary with all the moving chains next to you but not as bad as the 2MH we had latter. That thing sit higher around you & chains were whissing by right next to you, no guards. At least on the 24 you sat more above every thing.it's a wonder more farmers didn't lose more digits & limbs than they did. OSHA would have had a field day if they would have been in existence back then. | |
