My experience with the Indiana thin slab technology steel is that THEY could not produce quality steel from scrap. They could make refrigerator steel, but not a car bumper or fender. Chinese steel was actually superior to ours due to easy access to ore rather than scrap. In actuality the steel market is flooded by American low quality steel, Thats' the real reason they want protection. Over production.
The plant I worked at made bar steel. Commonly used for forging and extrusion and raw billets for other smaller capacity plants.
I cannot speak of the quality out of the flat roll mills |
