nw NC | What was actual plant population? How tall was corn? What stubble height is left in the field? How high up the stalk were leaves firing? Were ear husks green or brown? Can you post a picture of the remaining corn?
Cut a few stalks (with ears) at same height as your stubble that chopper left. Cut them into pieces that will fit into a box or plastic bucket. Weigh them subtracting weight of container. Average the weight of stalks and multiply by your actual harvested plant population. This is your yield in pounds per acre . Divide by 2000 for tons per acre. For instance , with 32,000 population you would need stalks weighing 1.785 pounds each to get 57,140 lbs. Possible if stalks still have sap in them. Many variables affect weight yield of silage, the main one being moisture . Amount of sap in the stalk being the main source. Unless loads are weighed and acreage measured, many reports of silage yields are overestimated. ( My opinion.) | |
