How old is the 'toddler'? To me toddler means 2-3, just wobbling along , certainly not climbing fences and jail breaking..... I haven't read all the responses, kinda stopped reading when folks started suggesting shooting the dog... wtf. Anywho, I know you said your relationship with the family is 'cool' but how about this for a novel idea. When you are home, let the kid into your yard, so he can play with the dog... you said your dog is friendly. Explain to him, and the parents that anytime you are home he's welcome to come over and play with rover, but you have to be home. This might just be a prime opportunity to mend the fences ( pun intended) with the neighbours.

And that way if the kid ever does break in when OP isn't home, the dog already knows the kid. The dog won't see the kid as an intruder. Dog will want to play instead of protect. If dog is as good as OP says then worst case the kid gets knocked over and trampled a little bit because the dog is so excited to see the kid.
