North Central Kansas | Last summer when we were on vacation in Europe we visited the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, Netherlands. I have been to Arlington To the National Cemetery. This was truly a different experience. These young men went to Europe to free the world from the grips of the Nazis, and never came home.
In this cemetery there are 8,301 US soldiers buried and 1,722 missing in action that are memorialized on the marble walls. The soldiers buried here died in the Netherlands, Belgium and in the Northern part of Germany. The US maintains this cemetery and others around the world. All US soldiers are buried in countries that were allies of the US. None are buried in Germany or Japan.
This is near the city of Maastricht. My dads artillery unit provided artillery support on the Northern flank for the battle that freed Maastricht. Later after the war one of his tent mates was killed in an accident with a Jeep in Germany. He is buried at this cemetery. We found the letter referencing the accident after we returned home. His funeral was held in Neustadt Germany. We had a layover in that town due to the train track was being repaired. We spent an hour there. In the letter my dad sent home to his parents talking about this man he mentions that the man killed had received a letter from his wife and two year old daughter. He says it came one day late.
Memorial Day is about remembering the young men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
If you want to look up someone who is buried in one of these cemeteries the Dutch have a volunteer group that puts information on individual soldiers.
