Chebanse, IL.....

This has been a few years coming. On May 17, 2018, the Air Force Museum (Dayton OH), will be unveiling the new Memphis Belle exhibit. If you do not care 2 cents about airplanes, or history, or people, don't bother reading on or following this.

Many air buffs probably know the story of the Memphis Belle, a B-17 from WW2. It was made very famous during WW2 by it's completion of 25 missions in 1943 and a return to the States to become an Army Air Corps campaign plane. It's had a couple of movies made about it. The last movie was about 25 yrs ago & was a box-office smash. But, sadly the real "Belle" B17 was sitting outside @ the Memphis TN airport deteriorating. Some don't realize how bad aluminum can corrode sitting in the midwest elements unprotected. Sure, they last forever (not really) in the dry desert, but that's not Memphis. Vandals had stripped the interior of souvenirs and the interior turned into one large pigeon coop. So, the Air Force Museum acquired the Belle and moved it to Dayton in 2005. It's been 13 years in restoration!!! When the AFM restores a plane....it is RESTORED. They don't use wooden guns or some other kind of an engine....they are 100% original. They often pull planes off exhibit when they need cosmetic touch ups after being in the public eye for years & years.

Here's a link to the "exhibit opening" @ the AFM:

Here's a link to a really neat modern video about the real "Belle", it's crew, and triumphant US tour in '43, & now it's new & permanent home @ the AFM in Dayton:

If you'd like to read a little history, here's Wiki synopsis:

If you've never been to the AFM in Dayton...just go. You can NOT see it in 1 day, especially if you stop to read anything. There are thousands & thousands of exhibits. If you were there 20 years ago, it's altogether different now. Take your camera. Keep in mind the museum is run by mostly volunteers. Finally....take your kids!! They'll remember it forever.

Actually, I expect it will be very crowded on the opening day. I'd probably wait a week or 2.
