West Chazy, New York

For countless generations, Africa had an extensive system of villages and connecting roads or trails, and river navigation was well developed.  There was agriculture and trade on a widespread scale (almost all of the slaves sold into the western hemisphere were war captives from the interior).  The truly scary parts were in fact deep in the jungle; around the edges there was enough of a human presence to keep the scary things somewhat in check.
