I would think there is less risk in farming than most business. Look at the low turnover rate.
Dollars invested sure do equal a low ROI though. Would be more money to be made if there was no insurance, also more money to be lost.
As far as corn, the widget factory might not produce as many widgets as last year but there is still plenty to go around.
