100 bushel corn on $550 per acre dirt =$5.50 break even
I use $550 because you say it cost $250 or approximately $2.50 per bushel non land cost +$300 rent. You said you buy your land but I struggle to understand how you can pay for a farm and still have profit on $50 per acre left. $7000 per acre dirt at $50 per acre left means you need income off 35 acres to buy one acre.
For 2016 my actual break even was lower because of a very large crop. For 2017 I Expect to be under $500 per acre due to lowered cost, however our corn looks like we may have to dry it. Right now with what I have sold I am looking at $.35 per bushel profit on corn.
I guess I was wrong. You do have higher break even than us. Did you marry well? Inherit well? Only farm one acre in the back yard? What area are you in that you and your neighbors can afford to loose money each year? | |
