Agree somewhat there. A bucket always seems to evaporate quicker.
But does soil evaporate as quickly as standing water? Maybe the top fractions of an inch does. And there is capillary pull up to the top, but what would be quicker? Assuming no plants to pull moisture? Assuming no plants shaded?
