Subject: RE: Looking to build a new dairy

SW Ontario
So here is an idea:

- Build a dairy barn/parlor.
- Buy in all replacements, either heifers or someone's good cull cow (guy up here in the great white north does this. Buys culls that are still milking 70lbs at cull price plus $100-200, feeds a cheap cornsilage based diet and sells them again 6-12mths later)
- Breed everything to a beef breed, heck put a beef bill in with cows
- raise no heifers then for replacements, everything goes into feedlot, as per plan
- as feed storage already (assuming if he his raising feedlot)

Notes:
-Milking cows is not like raising beef cows. A lot of little things can go wrong.
-That said, it's a interesting idea. A lot of the milk can go to the calves as well.
- build sand stalls, 3 or 6 row barn, skid scrape and find a decent used parlor. Not sure on the size you're planning, but aim to be done milking in an hour to 2. This gives you time to focus on your other chores.
