South Central Iowa | There are many different circumstances. Some make money above $1.50 corn and $5.00 soy. Most do above $3.00 and $8.50. A few need $5.00 and $12.00. A few of those are going bankrupt now, and a few more will if the prices can't improve or they can't unload debt. I would hazard that those people are 5-15% of producer, more in the south of Iowa, few in the north.
Field conditions have been great for fieldwork for weeks. Many Iowa farms are built for corn. You don't own 3 semis and a 250k bushel, $900K grain setup for soybeans. We trust corn more than soybeans and many are built on volume production and overall revenue. Recent price action and good conditions may have stolen some acres back from soy. My thoughts know people here. | |
