Subject: RE: Tagging a calf

manitoba
I am out of the cow calf business but Calved cows for 40years approx 200 cows/ year for the last 20+years. The last 15 years we calved in larger pens 10+acres. The majority of calves were caught tagged with a rfid tag, a dangle tag, tattooed, vaccinated, and dehorned and banded if needed within the first 24 hours. We had a secure alley set up between the calving paddock and the fresh water and mineral feeder. If we had a cow that did not want us processing the calf we would chase the pair to the water/mineral and catch them in the alley on their way back. Because the cows went to the water and mineral regularly they usually moved very easily.
