As a small boy, there was an ice house by the RR tracks that they used to refrigerate the box cars loaded with perishables. They did have an ice grinder sitting on the loading dock and Daddy would take us all to town occasionally and would buy extra ice (normally delivered to the house twice a week by horse and wagon). We would suck on the ice on the way home and then make ice cream . Mama always folded a quilt to place on top of the mixed and we would takes turns sitting on it and turning it. It was good all the time but really great when Mama had peaches or blackberries to put in it.
