South Dakota | I've gotten up to check a heifer in the middle of the night once and that was when one got bred at the wrong time and weather was coming in. Otherwise, I'm too busy with other jobs and things to work so hard for calves. When a heifer is starting to bag up, I bring her to the pasture at my house, if the water bag breaks and she doesn't have it out within an hour, I corral her up and pull it. My goal is always to calve heifers starting April 15 and cows starting May 1. This cuts down on labor, facilities, and feed costs, along with weather related death loss substantially. I've never penned a cow up that's about to calve. Doing it the low maintenance way allows me to do a lot of other things, I coach sports teams, spend time with the family, and have other income without being owned by my cows.
