Spring Ranch, NE
flaps are reusable, I'm on third year. Your percentage of flaps lost is right on with my experience. My average weaning weight is 600 and it seems that any lost flaps are out of the smaller late calves. A friend I help weaned his at 450-500 and lost 10% of his flaps. I also experience the cows balling for a few days, and I think its more noticeable since the calves are not bawling. I have fence line weaned in the past and essentially still do after pulling the flaps.

I think there is a benefit to two stage weaning especially with VFD implemented now. Not that its that big of a deal to get antibiotics, it is worth it for me to run them through the chute two more times. Very easy with descent facilities that I have anyway.

I have been advertising them as two stage weaned at the sale barn along with the vacc records, but can't say that I see a premium on account of that. They sell themselves like all cattle.
