Hedging small amounts over what is considered historically smart times to hedge is good risk management. You end up with a high average normally. Sure, one off years like 2012 can give you a gut wrenching feeling, but you're also making strong hedges for the next year and probably have a good percentage left unhedged to capitalize with this plan.
