Central South Dakota | A $120 an acre loss was quite possible on wheat last year. We had a variety yield close to 90 bushel an acre, poured the coals to it, but only came up with 9% protein. After protein discounts we would have been looking at a local cash price of $1.50 a bushel or less. 2017 was the first time in 40+ years we didn't plant a kernel of winter wheat on this farm. Between protein, test weight, vomitoxin, falling numbers, scab, ergot discounts producers are getting tired of end users pulling out the ky jelly and expecting us of to be the world's quality grain producer for a feed bunk price. | |
