NC Iowa | the post below on executors got me think about estate planning. i had a card in the mail inviting me to a seminar, so i went. i was surprised at how many were there. it covered some very basic information, with the option of scheduling a free 1 hour meeting with their estate attorney later. i think setting up a trust is the main reason many were there.
judging from the property transfers notices in the paper, many are transferring farmland from their name to a trust. i think i will look into it as well.
i know if property goes through an estate there is a stepped up basis. i don't know if that same treatment exists on property transferred through a trust. that could be a deciding factor.
i have been getting such invitations regularly, figured they were just a sales pitch, but is is about time i start looking into this.
