Feeding hay bales in bale rings or other types of feeders in a sacrifice area, moving the rings occasionally, provides some bedding areas with only a very small percentage of the hay really "wasted", no or little manure to handle in the spring and a very low labor system. I agree grazing stockpiled grass is not feasible in northern areas that get a lot of snow and ice. Unless you call my calves grazing standing unharvested corn as "stockpile" grazing. Controlled grazing the upper part of a corn plant held above the snow and ice does work for part of a balanced nutrition program, with good hay, mineral salt and water available free choice behind them. This has been used in the western provinces for years. |
