| I was stationed at Ft. Belvoir VA (next point in the Potamuc down stream from Mt. Vernon) and the roads and interstates were perpetual parking lots from 5 to 7 PM week days. It took about half an hour from Belvoir to Main Navy along the mall for an evening class if I left at 4:30. If I left at 5 it took two hours. Getting to the capital or the library of congress worked best anytime of day by public transit, the subways were a dream in those days ('68-'69). I tended to leave the post 4 ish and find a place to eat before the 6 PM classes closed to DC and that worked every time.
