House down the street from me was built a few years ago. Wife and I were out for a stroll one evening when it was being framed up. Noticed a steel "box" in one corner. Didn't look at it closely but it appeared to be a "safe room." The "box" was about the size I would imagine for a nice walk-in closet. So, yes, it can be done.
