Forget the puppy unless he wants a puppy. Guys agree to things all the time that they don't really want. Puppies can live for way too long if he doesn't really want one.
Go with the dinner and the bow. What kind of guy doesn't want to "unwrap" his wife ;-)
If time and money allows, a winter weekend at a bed and breakfast with a fireplace and a jacuzzi in the room could be a lot of fun.
