I have 2 heated dog bowls for my cats. The large holds a gallon, but freezes over sometimes.
The smaller one never freezes over.
For the chickens, I have a 6 gallon rubber pan with a bird bath weather in it.
For weight, I run the cord through a short piece of pipe. Currently I have a 6" piece of 2X2 square tubing, 1/4" sidewall. That holds it in place nicely in the bottom of the bowl.
I like the rubber pans, if they freeze I can tip them over and stomp the ice out of it.
