Have you looked at TiVo?  I have read about them, but have no experience.  I was told they could automatically record programs you choose, and often suggest programs based on your viewing habits.  I am thinking that if they can do what I think they can do, you might be able to set up her recordings, and perhaps she could learn how to play them.
