We have an over the air DVR made by Channel Master. Their Black Friday sale was the 1TB storage model for $250, looks like it has gone up in price again. http://www.channelmaster.com/DVR_Plus_1TB_built_in_p/cm-7500tb1.htm

It was extremely easy to set up, really just plug in and scan the available channels. Internet is not required, but if you have it hooked to internet, it gets 14 days of TV guide data. Without internet, it gets 2. The interface is clean, and as simple to use as I've encountered. My DirecTv DVR was harder to use in comparison.

There are no ongoing subscription fees, which is nice and different than the Tivo. Tivo is probably your only other option, unless you want to head off in a networked type solution. Which I suspect you don't, given the user.

Thank you. It looks like this one will work. I found an "open box" special on Ebay for $239: http://www.ebay.com/itm/252218164956?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&s...
