We have 1/4 inch blades on a Sunflower also. We would prefer to have 5/16" blades as available on some Landdoll disks. We provide 32" X 1/2" blades to a friend that pulls it with a Steiger to cut roots in the ground when clearing old fruit orchards. Great disk.
As to the reason why thicker is better = much longer service= heavier disk with greater penetration, and in stones much less breakage. Try a Landdoll 45ft disk ( 40,000 lbs plus) with less than 1/4" blades and then have fun changing them when they wear out, and try the disk in stone ground at 6mph. (A friend has a Landdoll 44 or 45ft with the 5/15" blades and it does well in stony ground at 6mph) | |
