Bremen, KS | For grades 1 through 8, I don't recall the arrangement as it was a parochial school. It wasn't unusual to get a book from the class a year or two ahead.
I recall having to go to the "book store" on entering high school and at the end of the semester they would buy them back. I did keep a couple for my own use as they were actually pretty good text books, one on small gas engines, as I recall. Many of the hard cover books had been used by prior classes.
Once I got to electronics school everything was bought outright with no buy-back so all the books were new. I kept them all, but pitched most of them into the recycle bin a few years back.
At all levels I attended, paper, pencils, pens, and other supplies were supplied by the student/parents. Supplies had to meet various requirements, e.g. no red ink pens, pencils had to be #2 lead (had no idea what that meant until I got into drafting class as a freshman), notebooks had to be a certain line height/lines per page, etc.
Who else remembers Big Chief tablets? Bet that would raise a stink these days!
