| Went to country one room school with outhouses,,,they checked out you a book for a subject if you needed one. then checked it back in at the end of the year. think you only pai for one that was damaged or lost. can remember going thru them just before summer to erase any pencil marks in them. Ink not allowed.
Small town high schoolwas much the same way. Its when I got to college had the sticker shock of buying individual books as needed. The book store made out like bandits selling books high,,,then buying back low,,,then reselling them again the next year. But lo and behold if it required a NEW book their was no used ones available,,,it was like 3 to 4 times worse.
At College There were lists around of people selling their old books for a little higher than book store price but still save you alot over their retail. If you knew incoming under class men you had it made.
Always furnished own paper for homework,tablets, pencils and pens, rulers compass protractor, pencil box etc. Tissues for sopping up,,, ink,,,hankies for blowing and wound repair.
In country school we drank from OUR cup parked on the window sill out of the crock water cooler. It came from pumping the handle pitcher pump in the yard,,even if 20 below,,,except for after floods that covered the well. Took alot of pumping to 'pump off' the crap water
I really think education took a step back when they all went to town to school and the country one rooms were all gone. It was getting tough to get enough teachers to go around. If you were last to fill a late opening you really got the bottom of the barrel. BTDT been a victem of that one.
