When you cut a limb off the existing tree, put it in a bucket of water for a few days until it sprouts new roots then keep very well watered for a period of time after planting, you can cut the bottom out of an old bucket and put around the base of the seedling to hold a small reservoir of water to soak in slowly instead of all running off to side. One's we have done, we have used a fairly small branch (<1.2" or so) and maybe 2-3' long.
