Subject: Need help explained nitrates wrap baleage

Redickville, Ont
For several years now I've had trouble with high nitrates in my hay. We grow potatoes so our fields are fertile. After potatoes we plant barley or spring wheat and under seed it. We put fert on for grain then cut or pasture fields for next three years. Some years when I wrap hay my nitrates are higher and protein is lower than if I baled it dry. Same field just three four days later to let it dry and problem goes away. I've tried baling it day after its cut but usually two days to get moisture down but doesn't seem to affect it whether it's 30% or 45%. I've tried cutting later in day and even after supper but didn't make much difference. Suppose to happen when plant is stressed and fermenting suppose to help burn up nitrates but it makes it worse. We use alfalfa clover Timothy mix at 10lbs and brome, fescue, orchard at 7lbs. We usually cut late cause where late getting spuds in usually start first cut June 20 which suppose to help. We wrap hay cause most year I got three days from cutting till it rains and where high in humidity. Feed guy stumped I'm his only potato/ cow calf to finish guy. Any input would be great.
