NC Kansas | Wheat stubble here, that isn't drilled back to wheat in the fall banks a lot of moisture in a semi-arid climate. For one the wheat quits using moisture about June 10th. Then it's kept clean of weeds all summer and the stubble catches every inch of snow that falls (a lot blows around here and bean stubble fields will pretty much be bare all winter) That deep subsoil profile of moisture banked for 12 months basically will carry a corn crop here through July in most cases if the heat isn't excessive. We still need to rain occasionally but it make a huge difference.
We have been experimenting with cover crops planted in August in wheat stubble going to corn and are finding the extra residue and nutrient cycling can help offset the water usage. Anyway it hasn't been a yield drag yet | |
