NC Kansas | we just call it a cover crop... that way if it actually makes money we'll feel good about it.
All jokes aside, in these parts of Kansas (West of highway 81) our corn/milo yields start to go down hill fast when we try to eliminate wheat from the rotation. Following beans with corn... or corn on corn is pretty hit and miss here. That wheat stubble is kind of like steroids for a corn crop out here. I know you have to step back and look at 5 year window and what crops were most profitable over the total rotation but I don't think many out here will ever get completely away from wheat. Some may try it for a few years but as soon as the price recovers (haha) some they will be back to wheat.
We have already cut out wheat as much as we can. We have no continuous, just wheat/corn/beans back to wheat rotation. | |
