Subject: RE: Alfalfa fertilizer cost vs gain

Helenville,WI
Alfalfa or alfalfa/grass mix consume a LOT of fertilizer per ton of yield. Not fertilizing hay will mine out a soil quicker than any other crop. Worst soil tests I have ever seen were in long term grass hay situations where guys would simply continue haying ground and not fertilizing for a decade after a seeding was pretty well played out.

Someone had mentioned applying 3 years worth of fertilizer at seeding. For our soils, that would equate to almost a ton of potash, 400-600 lbs of Dap, and probably 3 ton of lime along with some micros.

Ive noticed that in dry years, good fertility seems to almost double hay yields vs fields you see that are in the seed and mine fertility program. You can imagine what row crops look like following hay on soil that has p & k levels in the single digits.
